"2 Days and 1 Night," or "2D1N," has been a favorite since 2007. It's much more than a television program. The show's travel variety program format is simple, but has great staying power: celebrities go on a trip around South Korea to visit picturesque and strange off-the-beaten-path locations, and participate in games and challenges under entertaining, but horrible, road and weather conditions, all to win dinner, choose a comfortable place to sleep, and recommend some of South Korea's hidden travel spots. "2D1N" combines travel, games, and a buddy comedy all in one enjoyable and easy to watch show. This season's all star cast of Kim Jong-min, Moon Se-yoon and DinDin showcases their on-screen synergy and hilarious trips with the best of them. The show is not about a strong storyline or movie-like plots. That's not the point. The show invites you to laugh along with cast members as they struggle to go on crazy adventures and challenges with hilarious results. "2D1N" is the original and the best variety show!

The Marathon Sit: Pacing and Playability

With a runtime of 1 hour and 30 minutes, “2 Days and 1 Night” episodes have plenty of screen time. This is true for any variety show. Some episodes take the slow route, and begin with the cast meeting, travel time, and a series of missions or games. These games or missions can range from physical to trivia. The games are used to determine who eats the hot meal versus the cold ration and who sleeps in a bed versus outdoors. While the longer episodes provide greater character development and hilarious natural moments, there are travel and setup time segments which can get a little boring. Travel montages and setup to the next game can entice the second screen. However, these shows are difficult to pull away from. Unexpected inter-cast game banter and flash events keep the attention. The structure of each episode, and each trip usually spanning one or two episodes, make it easy to understand the progression of the plot without losing story. Long-standing jokes or cast inside jokes take a few episodes to catch on, but the emphasis on episodic structure keeps the plot easy to understand.

What Stuck (and What Didn't)

What really got me about “2 Days and 1 Night” was the show’s consistent ability to mine warmth and humor from a fairly simple idea. I think the cast’s chemistry is the most important ingredient in this show, and these characters are willing to be vulnerable, silly, and competitive. The show is really good at finding humor in everyday situations and upgrades minor annoyances to major laughs. The travel aspect of the show is even more inspiration. The show is a fantastic, though unconventional, tour guide of the country and really shows cool nature spots, great food, and cool historical sites. For a reality show that’s been on air this long, “2 Days and 1 Night” has good production. The cinematography goes to some cool places. The one thing that bugs me about the show is how repetitive and predictable the game play is in the show. The cast brings a ton of new energy to the show over the years, but the hunger games to get food and sleep get a bit old. Some segments are a little too long and some games just aren’t that great. The show really is 90 minutes long!

Screen Time: Where This Variety Shines

“2 Days and 1 Night” performs well on a variety of screens, but does exceptionally well on certain setups. For a quick commute, viewing this show on an Android phone is OK. The visual jokes, character reactions and cinematic shots can still be appreciated and you can pause it whenever you want. For the big screen, the beautiful shots of Korea really pop, and the ensemble comedy is appreciated even more when everyone can see the reactions. This is a show that is perfect for family viewing, as long as you enjoy lighthearted comedy and travel. The show is pretty family friendly as there’s not a lot of swearing, and there are some good natured jabs at family competitive spirit. This is not a deep show, so you can just relax and appreciate the show. The big screen is perfect for this show. Everything is appreciated more with the big screen and the beautiful landscapes pop for sure! The cast is very active and appreciated with the big stretches from the screen this show deserves.

The Cocoflix Download Dilemma

Does “2 Days and 1 Night” get a spot on your Cocoflix watchlist? Do you like Korean variety shows, travel content or just want consistent unscripted good funny TV? It’s a reliable source of entertainment that, even though this series is old, is able to still entertain and make you want to travel. The runtime of each episode makes it a commitment each episode, but a commitment that is usually worth the amusement that you will get. It doesn’t break any new ground in the reality genre, but the fact that it is still popular is a testament to its charming cast and simple premise. Download for the moments when you want to watch disarmed celebrities and unwind in the different travel locations. Be careful, there are some slow spots and you will end up craving Korean food at the end of each episode.
