After Ji-an's uncle dies, she inherits the killing shop. This sets Ji-an on a new journey to discover the dark secrets of her uncle's past while fighting for her life in the process. This series fits the genres of Drama, Action & Adventure, and Mystery, and with the TV-MA rating and the mature themes, intense sequences, this series certainly delivers on its promise of an adrenaline-fueled show full of emotional depth and violent confrontations. The protagonist is the strong female lead discovering the mystery surrounding her uncle's dangerous world.

Playback Performance: Pacing and Persistence

Watching A Shop For Killers is an exercise on both temporal control and user participation. Some reviewers remarked that, while the early episodes set the mystery and got Ji-an into danger, the structure already in use felt 'straightforward.' Jumping around in time to show different events in a non-linear approach, the series builds on the mystery around Ji-man and Ji-an in quick, confusing bursts. Even though it works to create suspense and leads the audience to answers in small increments, the construction of the overarching story can lose its audience in the confusion of the fragmentation and time skipping. As such, it isn't a show for browsing other apps, and the audience has to be active to piece the show together. The early episodes, in particular, show a franchise-level 'want for more' all because of great character writing and editing. What has really impressed me with this show is that they were clearly committed to well done action sequences, and boy do they pay off. The choreography of the fights gets a little silly, but the audience appreciates that and so do I. The characters of Ji-an and Jin-man are very well done and get you interested in their storyline and the hurdles that they are dealing with. The idea of inheriting an online weapon shop and being thrust into the assassin trade is a very original idea. There is a good build up to show the genetic link between Ji-an and her murdered uncle, which gives her an inherited strength that the audience is excited to see. The first episode also has cool, sleek action sequences that show potentially how the production budget will increase.

However, some plotlines and ideas that the show tries to push do not pan out in a satisfying way. The time jumps, while some audience members think are artistic, leave more holes in the plot than an audience member wants. Jin-man does some odd things that are clear contrivances to push the plot and are not good developments for a character. The disjointed plot also suffers from illogical jumps and, because of the very high demand for suspension of disbelief, a lot of viewers finish the show thinking, "What did I just watch and what was the point of all of that?"

Screen Test: Where to Watch

The rapidly changing plot structure of the show makes A Shop for Killers a better choice to view on a bigger screen. There are so many rapid flashbacks and subtle cues in the narrative that the distraction of a phone commute would take away a lot of enjoyment from the show. A PC would be a good choice with headphones. It would help cancel all the outside distractions. To get the full impact of the stylish openings and the action, you need the big screen in front of you. The best choice would be the family TV, as long as it has the TV-MA rating. This show lends itself best by being the only choice in the entertainment lineup. Letting you enjoy all the twists and turns of the mystery.
