In other words, Walter walks a carefully measured line to get into the methamphetamine production business. This is a great setup for a show filled with dark comedy because in this situation, he is clearly not the good guy. There are a lot of layers to this show as he peels back all the layers of Walter. He shows him having a great capacity towards evil, but justifies it all with family duty, making him a great villain. This is a show that aids your focus to break it down and capture the moral fall of Walt.

Playback Experience: A Binge-Worthy Descent with Pacing Quibbles

At Android, PC, and TV, Breaking Bad confirms its true identity as a deeply engrossing story that benefits from committed, single-sitting consumption. On PC with good headphones, the sound design, especially the silences, is visible. On the big screen, the beautiful cinematic, desert landscapes and tight close-ups pack an even bigger punch. Episode lengths are about an hour or less and, thus, have no issues with binge watching and can very easily clarify two or three episode sittings. While some audience reviews suggest that the first season is slow for viewers, I agree that the first episodes take some commitment and there is not much of an immediate adrenaline rush to the story. Throughout the episodes there is a great deal of careful, slow-building pacing. This type of pacing renders the story less appropriate for distractions and a chaotic, commute on a phone. Binge-watching this story requires engagement, and it is particularly valuable because the pace of the storytelling and the intricate plot lines creates second-screen temptations. The overall quality is high and even users that felt episodes started to lose quality in the later seasons, however, agreed the overall story and commitment to watching it was most definitely rewarding.

Standout Moments & Lingering Frustrations

The performance that really stood out to me was Bryan Cranston's. Walter White, in Cranston's hands, transforms from meek to menacing, and the writing is just aslaudable. There are solid payoffs to the little details inserted early on. The character development, especially with Walter and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), is complex, and at times, makes you question who's the good guy or the bad guy. The show has a great ability to create suspense with not-so-exciting circumstances, such as a fly in a lab. However, the show frustratingly so, puts Walt in these situations that you think are impossible to get out of, only for him to somehow come up with this clever, yet nifty, way out. Although it helped to maintain the plot, often times these situations were a bit of a stretch. Additionally, while the acting was very good, some of the supporting characters seemed to only represent the next step in Walt's downfall and less so a well-developed character with his or her own separate plot. The drug trade world building is very gritty and realistic, but relies a lot on shocking plot twists, which can get tiresome.

Optimal Viewing Platform: Big Screen Drama, Not Phone Fodder

Thanks to its dark and atmospheric cinematography, combined with excellent use of the desert vistas and intense character close ups, Breaking Bad is a prime example of how a show can be even better on the big screen. It is not appropriate for family TV night, given its TV-MA rating and graphic content. A dedicated PC session or a solo viewing on a smart TV is definitely the way to go. It is about the visual story telling, and while you can watch the show on your phone via the Cocoflix app, you do it at your own risk to the enjoyment of everything that makes Breaking Bad a heavily cinematic show. You end up losing theuse of the intentional editing and the bold color palette. The setting's grandeur and the facial subtleties may as well not exist, and a plot that twists as much as Breaking Bad does may be extremely easy to lose focus on in a distractive environment.

The Download Decision: A Calculated Risk Worth Taking

So, does Breaking Bad earn a download? Right, to start off, why not? Appreciate the dark? Like character development and drama with a pinch of the unconventional? Download this show. Critics have particularly enjoyed the show and its plot. However, if you're looking for a bright and light rom-com, or something that will get you hooked in the first episode, you'll probably cry in the first few episodes. The show does get better but it can be a struggle so watch with a heavy heart. The show is long and cancerous, but the story of a man's journey with the show's cleverly designed plot finds its way into the show's main character and his embiggenment. It is a dark crime drama that will actually be worth your time. It's all about the long game, so be prepared.
