Diving Into the Unofficial Village

The movie, Peddi, begins with an interesting premise about an athletic hinterland villager, who, when discovered, becomes his community’s only chance. The story has potential to be a good underdog story against the unfair systems. While it does a compelling work of building an impressionable world, even with a fantasy central conceit about a village off the map, director Buchi Babu Sana sets expectations well. This also gives an impression to the audience that everything is possible in this world, and significantly makes this world feel like his. Ram Charan has a lot on his shoulders since in this world, he has to carry the emotional and physical burden of the fight. This movie does a good job of creating a world where this one man’s fight becomes the fight for the survival of the people of the community. The emotional and physical burden of the fight he carries is visible to the audience. With an extremely talented cast, the focus should have been on creating a compelling, powerful story.

The Three-Hour Marathon Test

Get comfortable - Peddi comes in at a strobing 3 hours and 9 minutes. That’s a sign that it’s not for casual viewing, and on Cocoflix it did feel largely lengthy. Critics note that the film’s pacing is uneven, with plenty of stretches in which the story does not progress. Sana does come up with some really good ideas, but the development takes its time and the thematic elements do not always align. There is a lot of conflict in this film of balancing telling a long story, and not losing the audience. While watching this film on my PC, I found myself checking the progress bar constantly, which is a sign of the 'second screen' temptation. The film does try to show more episodic moments and slow burning, dramatic moments, however it fails to do so seamlessly. This film is not a passive background movie. You need to give it your full attention, and it fails to do so repeatedly.

Highs, Lows, and Lip-Sync Woes

I've always been a big fan of Ram Charan. I was also very impressed by his performance in the lead role. It shows that he also has the potential to perform very well with a character that is very intense and sensitive. The emotions that his character portrays are totally relatable that his character's struggles also become mine. Even though the script is very weak at some points, Charan's performance brings an important focus and provides essential clarity on the film's central issue. The film shows off his athletic abilities in some really great choreographed action sequences. There are a lot of very good things about this film, but there are some things that are really very annoying. One of these very annoying things, also supported by very weak audience ratings, is the lip-sync in the film that is noticeably wrong. This very annoying technical error pulled me completely out of the story because it disrupted the performance. Some reviewers said this film which could potentially be very socially relevant, heavily focuses on idolization and worship and is based on very very tired and overdone commercial tropes that do not add anything of value and ultimately destroys whatever its potential for social relevance is. This feels very much like a missed opportunity.

Screen Suitability: From Pocket to Projector

If you can manage it, Peddi is a good movie for a nice, large screen viewing. I had the movie on my big TV and I was happy I could fill the screen with beautiful landscapes and engage fully with the more action oriented scenes of the film. It also ate up a lot of the film's runtime splendidly. On PC, it was a decent enough experience, but the runtime began to drag and it started to feel like a long movie to sit down with. The Android experience was even worse. It's not something you can do on the go on your commute or whatever else you have planned for the day. It demands your attention. It's not a movie you can have playing in the background. Close enough to distracted viewing is a damn shame because Charan is good in this, animation and visual flair aside. Lip sync is a problem throughout. You need to sit down and watch it.

The Download Decision

Though the premise of the film makes the first two thirds or so of the film rather enjoyable, the runtime issues of Peddi (2021) can be blamed on its ambitious structure and poor time management. Ram Charan shines as always, and his performance in the role is quite enjoyable. The rest of the cast is quite good as well and give supporting performances. Unfortunately the film is rife with somewhat distracting lip sync issues. Overall the issues are understandably forgivable to enjoy this performance. Directorial confusions in structuring are generally not entertaining, but this film is meant to showcase a great performance, and some message underlying all of that. For these reasons, consider this film if you have 3 seemingly endless hours to spare and are part of Ram Charan’s fan club. For the rest of the viewing audience, this film probably will not provide a cinematic experience worthy of a complete viewing. A rainy Sunday should bring this film out of retirement, but only for this elite viewing audience. This one is a definite download for fans of Charan and drawn out narratives, while the rest should probably skip this one.
