Stranger Things: Tales from '85 promises to sit us back down in the monster-infested town of Hawkins, but this time it's animated. We know this won't be a same old, same old retread of the lore, and this time, we get to explore new lore thanks to the beauty of animation. These guys know animation. With Eric Robles and Jennifer Muro at the helm, the duo that helped create all sorts of animation in kids programming to established IPs, we are assured to get beloved nostalgia with new and exciting storytelling. The synopsis, "Winter. Hawkins. 1985. Welcome back to a town crawling with secrets, where beloved heroes are facing fresh mysteries... and an all-new breed of strange," gives you just enough to know this will have the vibes of the Stranger Things series fans love. The animation allows for interesting character design and a cool new monster, so fans will get just enough for it to feel familiar, and creative enough to keep them on their toes. The TV-PG rating is good for building audience, as spin-offs of the main series should do.

The Viewing Session: Pacing and Pull

Watches of one season of Tales from '85 on Cocoflix tend to feel more 'snackable' than an extended viewing. Based on its animation layout (most likely 20-30 minute episodes) and its mysterious storyline, I would estimate the average episode runtime is much shorter. Each episode seems to tell a satisfactorynrult earc, yet more importantly, it seems to build on a larger mysterious case that pulls you through the series. The fast pace helps avoid dull 'filler' episodes, which is extremely important when viewers watch on their phones. 'Tales from '85' manages to escape the second screen temptation, likely thanks to its font selection and its focus on character relationship building. Unlike other shows, it moves along at a brisk pace without wasting time. This makes the series the perfect time filler for your commutes or the perfect time focus for an evening session.

Hits and Misses in the Upside Down

Tales From '85' has completely sucked me in with its ability to capture the essence Stranger Things has without simply reflecting it frame by frame. The style of animation used is unique, but it captures the essence of the 80's as well as the weird and atmospheric nature of Hawkins. As the title promises, the ‘all-new breed of strange’ taps into the creature designs within the Upside Down, while bringing something new to the table thanks to the potential of animations without the constraint of practical effects. The voice actors for this series include Brooklyn, Davey Norstedt, Jolie Hoang-Rappaport, and Luca Diaz. They add new life to both the ‘beloved heroes’ and supporting/new characters. Everything else aside, the biggest inconvenience this series has is comparison. With how strong it stands on its own, that makes it hard for some moments to pack as much of a punch as the live-action counterparts, especially in more emotionally raw situations, due to the nature of the constraints of live performance and the animation process. Since this series is rated TV-PG, gritty elements of the series as well as the darker nature are watered down, which is a let down for fans looking for the full horror experience.

Screen Test: Where It Shines Brightest

There's a lot of versatilty with this series. On an Android phone, Tales From '85 is a great piece to bring along your commutes or short breaks. The animation is bright and easily digestible, with a ton of detail that doesn't get lost due to the smaller screen. It's highly episodic, so you can jump in and out as you please. The PC experience draws the animation and the Hawkins environments a lot of focus, really giving you appreciation for the detail in the environment. The sound design brings an even higher appreciate for the work done to create the mystery and action elements of the series. That being all said, it is at its best on the big screen. It's a great series to get the whole family in the living room, with a TV-PG rating meaning it's safe to watch with the whole family. With the Stranger Things Universe, it is a great spot to bring young audiences, without losing the older audiences, with the great mix of quality and quantity for action and sci-fi offerings.

Is Stranger Things: Tales from '85' something you need to download? For the right group of people? Absolutely! If you are a fan of the original series, and are looking for some additional lore, secretly hidden cases, and a '85 trip to Hawkins, then this one is an excellent reason for you to click that play button! It is an enjoyable stand alone spin off that pays respect to the original series and offers a new way to see everything that you love. This is a wonderful choice for someone who loves animation or has been wanting to get into the world of Stranger Things in a more gentle manner. This does an excellent job of providing an enjoyable story that proves there is plenty of strange left to explore in Hawkins, no matter what format is used.
