“The Death of Robin Hood” is not a cheerful jaunt through Sherwood Forest. From the very first frames, Michael Sarnoski shows us his vision of the story, a vision that goes against the grain and is shot in black and white. It opens up to a Robin Hood who is broken and violent, and is bleeding. Hugh Jackman, Jodie Comer, and Bill Skarsgård’s castings promise intensity, and the film certainly delivers on that promise, just not in a way you may be looking to be entertained. It is in an often dark and violent way. This isn’t a movie that will appeal to those looking for lighthearted heroics. Some found it unnecessarily brooding and filled with excessive violence, especially in the first act. You may find this to be the most compelling take on the character in recent years, but it is even more dark and brooding than most of the other takes. It shows that Robin Hood’s journey is truly one of suffering and of deserving what it is he inflicts on others.

The Cocoflix Play-Through: A Test of Resolve

Running at a lengthy 2 hours and 3 minutes, “The Death of Robin Hood” definitely seems to have that length. However, it doesn’t seem to have too much of it for the wrong reasons. Sarnoski lets his drawn out and sometimes slow paced scenes let his actors’ expressions and the landscape do all the talking. This movie is definitely not something that lets you check social media and email without missing things in the movie. Some say the pacing in the movie is too brooding, and rightfully so, but a good portion of the movie does have some good atmospheric build. As previously mentioned, there are some action sequences that do show up and are well placed. The rest of the plot relies heavily on it’s mood. The action sequences really do help build the cinematic contrast that the movie desperately needs because the plot can feel dragged out. The movie is definitely meant to feel dark, but there are some moments where the plot feels drawn out and the violence does feel excessive. There are points where the movie really feels like it’s crossing a boundary from good artistic violence to bad excessive violence for bad visuals, which really takes away from the movie.

Gritty Gravitas vs. Grueling Grind

Hugh Jackman as a grizzled version of Robin Hood gave me goosebumps. He did not hold back in this performance and it was magnetic and devastating all at once. Jodie Comer adds depth and just the right touch of humanity in such a barren story. This movie looks stunningly beautiful in a haunting and post-apocalyptic way. Of course, this also reflects such horrors as the world of the main characters. It is brilliant, but the violence and the unrelenting bleakness are the main complaints about the movie. It doesn't take much between harsh violence and overly monotonous violence, and the movie very much crosses that line in its portrayal in probably the best hour of the show. Because of it, it is almost impossible to watch this and not feel like you're putting yourself through the ringer just to finish it. In a way, it's good TV, but it is very much not good drama. Divisive audience surveys clearly showed a 'C+' average, and many people did not enjoy or appreciate the grit this movie is known for.

Screen Suitability: Big Screen Grit or Mobile Majesty?

Due to its astounding imagery and strong atmosphere, "The Death of Robin Hood" is best enjoyed on a larger screen. I’d highly suggest watching this on a big screen TV with low lights and surround sound. The atmosphere and sound design are what vividly draw you into this world. The cinematography coupled with the brutal nature of the world on display make it impossible to ignore the images on the screen. Even though it can be watched on a PC to experience a more focused watch, the details of the world might be lost. It would be more so on a phone while taking a commute where the world of the movie is a slow burn with a much demanding tone. This draw your attention no matter how much you might be out and about. This requires a watch where you can experience every detail of the cinematography.

The Grim Reaper’s Verdict

“The Death of Robin Hood” boldly takes us away from the fantasy & onto the dark character driven dramas. The strong performances & atmosphere make for a good, but often uncomfortable, watch. Dark, slow burn thrillers are not everyone’s cup of tea, but if you enjoy this, along with a unique dark take on a classic, you’ll enjoy this one. If you’re a stickler for action or the light & fluffy, you might walk away feeling bored. Raw savagery might conjure cold feelings in traditionalists. The film certainly deserves its rating, & goes against the grain in the film world, some enjoy and some people just can’t get into it. If you think you can handle the ride, it might be enjoyable, just go in knowing what it is. To recap, it’s a dark twisted character driven thriller, not for the faint of heart. People who appreciate the odd,adescend heaps of praise on it. Cocoflix fans will appreciate it, but we advise you go in knowing what to expect. Enjoy!
