I find that the length is just right for watching on the phone during a commute. That length of time allows you to start a case, enjoy some banter, and get a small piece of closure. The pacing for some shows is great, but The Rookie seems to skip over some things that other shows enjoy. I think that the pace for The Rookie is running a tad fast. Some character arcs take more episode to develop, but the cases of the week are resolved, investigated, and introduced within the episodes. For a case of the week being resolved so quickly, I think there should be an overarching case that involves some long term character development. The Rookie does not require you to watch every episode, which I think is great because you can’t get too lost and skip around. I think The Rookie is perfect for people who like to watch TV while doing other things because of its great pace, but I also think that people like binge watching The Rookie because it creates a great mood of wanting to watch more.

What surprised me most about “The Rookie” was how consistently the show blended its dramatic crimes with humor and an inspiring optimism. I think a lot of the credit for that must go to Nathan Fillion, because Nolan is charming and upbeat and, even when dealing with detective duties, has a way of showing us that despite the dull routine does the important, behind the scenes work that makes a show like this so interesting and entertaining. The character development of the main cast is arguably its biggest strength. The show does a good job capturing the characters struggles and joys and making the viewers care about them. "The Rookie" for the most part, sticks to personal office and workplace drama rather than dealing in complex and controversial politics. It’s no coincidence that what the critics and viewers seem to enjoy about “The Rookie” is its balance. “The Rookie” isn’t necessarily a show that is too funny, or too serious, as one critic put it “After awhile, it loses touch with reality.” Although the show is populated with “gritty” and “raw” characters, the optimism and good-natured feel still prevails, and does not appeal to some who appreciate a more realistic rawness.
