Classic storyline: 3 Connect, an emerging musical act and the main draw on the Camp Rock reunion tour, needs an opening act, so they return once again to the oldest and the best camp for aspiring musical artists (Camp Rock). Sure enough, several aspiring musical artists (Liamani Segura, Malachi Barton, and Lumi Pollack) are at camp to show that they are the best of the best for the opening act spot. That means lots of hopeful campers, high stakes auditions and of course the stress of new friendships all presented in a kid friendly package of laughter and lots of tears. Director Veronica Rodriguez captures the essence of Camp Rock, making the focus of the movie the young performers. If you expect this to be a gritty drama, you're in for a disappointment because this is a clean cut feel good movie that is a spiritual successor to the other Camp Rock movies.

The Jam Session: Pacing & Playability

Camp Rock 3 comes in at 1 hour and 36 minutes and has a movie structure, as opposed to a series. This means a continuous flow which is very important for a musical with narrative that flows in and out of music. Pacing wise, this gets intense, especially with new campers and competition introductions. This is a family movie oriented for kids. Camp Rock 3 keeps things snappy. Nothing gets tedious or boring as the movie moves seamlessly from one musical theater performance to the next and from one dramatic performance to the next. This family movie keeps parents satisfied while their kids Sing and Dance along to each and every song and beats the purpose of having you at the edge of your seat to know what happens next.

The new cast, with the especially notable vocal talent of Liamani Segura, excels in the new cast’s energy and vocal performances, making them the new torchbearers for the musical franchise. The songs are catchy, and the franchise’s sounds have been but consistently extended to accommodate them. It is great to see a G-rated release that can execute elements of plot that touch on the concepts of ambition and the self with a more complex level than what might be expected of the genre. The main problem that many people will have with the film is the lack of real surprise that is almost entirely predictable. Overall, most of the film is a satisfying formula of trendingóNÁ logic and resolution. Although it is comforting for many, the predictability of the film bodes little depth and complexity system level for many not in the younger demographic. The stakes, performed with great emotional expressivity, never actually culminate in true high drama, which is somewhat disappointing.
