What stood out the most for me in "Rosebush Pruning" was the style. The contrast of the sun-drenched exterior of the Spanish villa against the shadowed spaces to express the family’s hidden secrets creates a beautiful and striking setting. I thought the acting across the board was strong. Riley Keough and Callum Turner, in particular, perfectly captured the complex emotional cocktail of family members who possess both a sense of entitlement and adoration yet are quick to resent one other. Dark and sometimes surprising humor pulls the film forward and adds nice counterbalances to the emotionally intense moments. Having a good balance of genre elements such as comedy, drama, and thriller can be risky, but when it clicks, like it does here, it offers an enjoyable and distinctive entertainment experience.

That said, being ambitious comes with its challenges, and this is true of this film as well. The label of "a mixed-bag satire" fits this film. The Spanish Villa might have amazing style, yet the 'shallow bits' creep in most when the themes are heavily explored. The satire feels dull and lacks the edge to critique the inherent dysfunction of the ultra-wealthy family. The “reveals” in the film that surround the mother’s death feel artificial and used to shock the audience. The changes in tone can disappoint the sense of serious dramatic moments. Dramatic moments feel underwhelming and cut short from shock comedy. Though drastic moments can remain in the film and feel serious, it can have the opposite effect and lessen the emotional impact of the film.

Screen Suitability: Where It Shines

The feature length adaptation of Rosebush Pruning benefits a lot from a big screen. If you have a large TV, the beautiful Spanish countryside villa backdrop brings a lot of immersion as you can just as easily see the beauty that exists in Serrano-Alarcón’s idyllic surroundings and juxtaposes the family's internal drama. All of Rosebush Pruning’s main cast have a lot of quiet, fragmented moments, so having a big screen is an absolute necessity to appreciate them on a deep level. Of course, you can watch it on your work computer, but it really just becomes a film with a lot of potential that is underutilized. I would say it definitely can be your film of choice on your commutes on your Android phone because of its concise run time. It could definitely have people wanting to multitask because of the stretches, but perhaps if you have a small screen on your commute, just save it for when you are home for dinner time. This is definitely not a family movie but if you have a significant other that enjoys dark comedies, I would definitely say watch it for the dark satire that represents family betrayal and dark secrets with illusions of paradise.

"Rosebush Pruning" is a slow burn character-driven film. While there is some dark comedy throughout, if you’re looking for a fast-paced comedy or a thriller this isn’t for you. However, if you’re a Cocoflix user and you have enjoyed watching wealthy families slowly fall apart with beautiful shot compositions and well-executed acting performances, then this is an interesting film, however flawed, for you. It’s definitely enjoyable but doesn’t have as much depth as many other similar films. This film is definitely worth a download and will give you some unique shots and an interesting perspective. Again, if you go into this film expecting more from the plot and a faster pace, you will be disappointed.
