Your Ticket to Mallorca Drama
Step into the dazzling city of Mallorca with The Last Sunrise, but keep in mind, this isn't your typical rom-com. The first release of 2026, this movie is a more somber, more meaningful drama. This 1 hour and 47 minute movie, rated R for strong content with emotional depth. We follow Ry (Maia Reficco), who is a college student with a chronic illness, as she takes a reluctant trip with her mom (Eva Longoria) on a supposedly restorative vacation. Ry meets local Fernando Lindez, and makes a spontaneous decision to start living her life to the fullest. Family secrets and her chronic illness threaten to undo her. Carlson Young seems to have a more meaningful story in mind when he casts his actors, steering clear of surface level romances, to cut more deeply into the themes of death and family through the lens of his characters.
The Sitting: How It Plays Out
At 1 hour and 47 minutes, The Last Sunrise hits just the right notes for a movie of this style. It's long enough to be impactful but short enough to keep you engaged without losing your interest. At most, you'll be commuting this movie to the big screen for your average movie night. The beginning draws you in nicely with exposition that explains Ry's reluctance and the romance. The middle of the movie drags slightly. The acting and discovery of the drama and family secrets does offer a neat addition to the pacing, but the momentum does take slight hits to explain what is happening. This is a glad-you-asked movie where the great deal of the pacing is driven by the discovery and acting of the secrets the characters are concealing. In terms of pacing, the discovery of the secret of the family's deceased patriarch that explains the secrets the family has hidden does a great job at keeping you interested.
What Stood Out (Good & Bad)
What stood out to me the most in The Last Sunrise was Maia Reficco’s performance. She gives both dimensions of her character’s burden; of Ry’s sickness and the journey of self-discovery, with an strong and vulnerable balance. Her chemistry with Fernando Lindez feels real and brings legitimacy to the on-screen romance even with the dark looming presence. Eva Longoria grey-zones her performance of a mother’s role, balancing her characters’ concerns with her character’s issues with inner strength. She means mom but she’s definitely more than a supporting character. The film captures Mallorca and the theme of fleeing beauty in a gorgeous light which is enhanced by the themes of freedom. It also commendably follows Ry’s sickness and goes beyond the typical disease of the week example. In other words, illness as a plot device. An unfortunate shortcoming of the movie is that many of the reveals and twists are predictable and unoriginal. Especially the ‘long-hidden family secrets’ which adds some stakes, is a commonplace trope known to diminish drama. I also the think the R rating on the movie was warranted due to the themes, and while it was rating justified, there were some close calls in scenes that could have pushed more on the emotional edge had they gone beyond what you had to imagine.
Best Screen for Your Cocoflix Experience
If you want to watch The Last Sunrise, choose the big-screen TV. The subtle contrast between the vivid shades of blues and the warm earth tones will really pop on your big screen. You can really get sucked into the scenery, which is important when watching Ry's escape. It is perfectly viewable on your computer monitor. The sound and graphics will pull you into the movie. It is not a bad way to watch it, but a bigger screen would be better. It is viewable on your Android phone, but watching it on your computer really is a better way to watch that movie. It has moments that are slower and more thoughtful, and they will be lost if you watch it on your phone. The sound cues are very subtle and will be quiet and become lost in a busy environment. This movie is best appreciated if you sit back and relax. It really does need your full attention to enjoy, and a nice big TV lets you do that.
Quick-Fire Verdict: Hit Play or Skip?
Should The Last Sunrise get a download on Cocoflix? For the fans of both character-centered dramas and sincere mythical romantic dramas I would definitely give it a download, however, the film does suffer from pacing issues when it begins to wander a bit too far. It does do well in making up for its flaws mainly by having some strong performances, sincerity in it’s emotion (and its beauty), and some surprisingly well-done cinematography and production design. It is more of a film that can be enjoyed intellectually than it’s a feel-good film. Regardless, if you're into mature dramas that have also been given a respectable audience score of 8.2 and that also isn't afraid to empathize with it's characters about the harder more morally gray parts of life with some beautiful countryside and great character-driven drama; then overall I'd say this is worth the watch.
