Peering Through the Lens of the Apocalypse

There is little in the new 2025 War of the Worlds movie directed by Rich Lee that resembles other sci-fi blockbusters or War of the Worlds movies. Instead of destruction on a grand scale and iconic alien tripods, Lee has gone for a more claustrophobic approach where the story is more contained and tight. We’re not dealing with the radiation fall-out on ground zero. We’re dealing with Will Radford, a Homeland Security Analyst, who is played by Ice Cube. Instead of a vast panoramic view, we get the shocking aliens coming via the digital feeds and whispered conversations in a control room. Along with Eva Longoria and Clark Gregg, this more centric approach to character builds seems to be the main focus. While it will come as a surprise to many, Lee has opted to change this bombastic alien invasion story into a more contained smart and sophisticated espionage thriller. While it may be a good idea to have your expectations adjusted, War of The Worlds is no longer a series of grand blockbuster movies. Instead it has shed its skin to become a more intelligent movie of our digital world seen through screens within smaller contained nested levels of storytelling. War of the Worlds is no longer the sci-fi epic blockbuster it once was.

A Tense 91-Minute Sit-Down

"War of the Worlds" (2025) keeps things short and sweet, clocking in at a tight 1 hr. 31 min. One of the last things you want when you sit down to watch a sci-fi thriller is to feel as though time stands still as you wait for and through the boring parts, but the runtime in this case serves the story well by helping in containing bloat. In fact, what's most impressive about this film is the pacing. I think this is something a lot of people have noticed and praised this film for - having a shorter run time, it is easy to see the film's elements pulled together, while, of course, serving a compelling, engaging story. A short run time may be attributed to bloat, but there's really none of that in this film. It's good at what it does best, pushing Radford along to understand more to piece his story on the mystery that will keep you entertained, even if you have a limited time to watch.

The Innovation and the Inevitable Compromises

This film has an audacious reinterpretation of a remote classic story and I appreciate that. Knowing what one of the most advanced alien civilizations does through the eyes of a nation's mass surveillance control room is just a very new idea. Watching an invasion that happens off screen is much scarier than actual confrontation and this script does a great job exemplifying that. The creativity of the script, by audience accounts, with a "limited budget," is very impressive. Ice Cube does a great job playing Radford with a lot of texture to his elf and creating a relatable struggle to a very sci-fi concept. The acting is decent at worst. The special effects are kind of "passable," which is audience code for just ok. Though they aren't great, the effects donot take away from the film. There aren't a lot of sleek special effects in a movie called "War of the Worlds," so the title does not fulfill a lot of artistic expectations. Many times the creativity makes up for the "limited budget," and design choices add a lot of texture to the world. However, budget does endpoint visual effects on movie and this one looks very noticeably like any cheap sci-fi movie.

Best Viewed on a Compact Display

"War of the Worlds" (2025) positions itself best on smaller monitors. I consumed this thriller on my Android device on my commutes and on my lunch break PC. It seemed the ideal way to digest this film. The surveillance room's contained nature and an emphasis on digital feeds means the "passable" special effects are less bothersome on smaller devices. The film builds suspense with performance and information, and as such, the intimate watching of a phone or tablet is perfect. On larger monitors, the special effects are more glaringly bad, and distract from the overall great story. This sort of film is enjoyable on the larger TV, but not in a way that benefits from the large screen. This is more of an intimate hatched watch.

Earns a Download for the Concept Alone

Although “War of the Worlds” (2025) has its flaws, it has enough appeal to grab a spot on your Cocoflix watchlist. You'll want it there if you enjoy sci-fi thrillers with a lower budget. “War of the Worlds” isn’t a good movie. Critics will call it “Uber trash” for its lack of alien invasion spectacle. Some people will enjoy the low budget movie for its one of a kind perspective, quick runtime, and tight story that chooses to use clever storytelling rather than expensive special effects. “War of the Worlds” manages to be a refreshing addition to a boring genre. A highly creative, ingenious script can do an amazing amount of things with limited resources, as this movie shows. If you like sci-fi thrillers that show you an invasion without the use of binoculars, feel free to click and take in this alien invasion shown through a bank of monitors.

What works

  • Innovative surveillance-centric reinterpretation of the classic story
  • Taut 91-minute runtime keeps pacing brisk and engaging
  • Creative script effectively builds tension on a limited budget
  • Decent lead performances, particularly from Ice Cube

What falls short

  • Special effects are only passable, detracting from visual impact
  • Not a traditional alien invasion spectacle, potentially disappointing some
  • Limited action sequences due to the control room setting
