This two-hour and one-minute, PG-13 drama, leans into Washington’s early mistakes to form a case study on what makes him a good leader. Ben Kingsley and Mary-Louise Parker lend this young actor, William Franklyn-Miller, their gravitas in what is truly a grounded and honest retelling. Historical dramas ride the line between reverent and dramatic. While this film lends more weight to the former, it is ultimately a compelling case study for why Washington might be a good guy. Sally Fairfax's character, played by Mia Rodgers, is one of these issues. Her performance is so modern that it was so distracting and by the time I realized she was playing a character in the 18th century, I was pulled out of the Downton Abbey setting into the 21st century. The film also suffers from a lack of consistency. It is not able to engage the audience fully into the world of the story because of its sincere historical inclinations and sharply off-key character representations.

Screen Suitability: TV Night or PC Dive?

Based on its slower pace and focus on dialogue and historical accuracy, Young Washington is best enjoyed as a full length feature. The calmer pace and the occasional big action scene, plus the visual detail of the period, make this film best enjoyed on TV with more than average speakers.
