Stepping into the Butcher Shop

Rhys Frake-Waterfield has proven themselves able and willing to reimagine classic childhood stories as horror by making movie adaptations. They continue this trend with Pinocchio: Unstrung. If you have seen any of their work, you know what you are getting into. They use nostalgia as fuel for their low budget/high concept horror movies. Like their other movies, you will not be seeing a heartwarming version of the Disney classic. The description adds a Cricket who is more like Jigsaw, a Pinocchio on a blood soaked mission to become a real boy like his brother by self-carving. These descriptions give enough info to know they are working in the general area of a grindhouse version of the classic story. This version clocks in at a 1h 22m runtime, meaning there is no time for them to give into the temptation to built a complex world and instead opt for a fast hit. The fact that Robert Englund is in the film means horror fans might get a fun cameo or at the very least lending their acknowledgement to this genre to a indie horror film.

The Sitting Experience: A Quick Carving

Testing Pinocchio: Unstrung on multiple devices, the 82 minutes was arguably the best thing about the movie. It is a perfect length for watching on your phone on your commute. The pacing is quick and keeps you consumed throughout to the point you almost can’t check other applications. Frake-Waterfield is aware of the limited attention spans people have on their phones. That’s why the plot, or let’s just be honest and say the violence, is quick and gets you to the next setup. Watching the film on my PC in an evening session made the film’s lower production values more noticeable, but the quick edits and practical effects, which are this director’s specialty, still delivered the blow. There is not much of a deep story or character arc that prolongs the film. It’s Pinocchio’s journey of bloodshed. This makes it resistant to the second screen. You either take a seat for the ride, or you don’t and it doesn’t take long to feel bored.

Impressions: Wood, Gore, and Englund

I loved the dedication to its bonkers premise. Pinocchio actually chisels his way into becoming an actual boy, thanks to a “sinister Cricket.” From a conceptual standpoint, I think this is brilliant within the world of horror, and while the budget no doubt restricted it, I think the film doesn’t skimp onimagination with the premise. The effects that are actually present are pretty gross but really lean into the body horror aspect of the film. While most films wouldn’t want to be cast under the horror genre, with Robert Englund on board (even if it's a supporting role) no doubt there is a touch of class that elevates this film from the typical straight-to-streaming Saw copycat ripoffs. Englund gives you a flashback of why he is an icon of the genre. There are problems though, the clunky dialogue is an annoyance. Some of the performances are also rough and may pull you away from the experience, especially with an entertaining and savage violence spectacle taking precedence. Overall, an enjoyable and entertaining watch.

The Best Screen for Pinocchio's Carnage

Having a brief run time allows Pinocchio: Unstrung to stand out in a way that does and doesn’t work for the theater experience. With its overall aesthetic and focus, it is a good candidate for a quality tablet or laptop, and especially for when you want to get something entertaining for an evening or afternoon solo viewing. If you want to blast the budget, resource constrained, sets and cinematography on the big screen, you will most likely lose some of the immersion. The pace does made it good for a phone, but the nitty gritty of the gorier scenes is best enjoyed on a bigger screen so you can appreciate the effects. This isn’t a movie safe for family entertainment unless your family has a penchant for the macabre and horror. You can enjoy some great imagination filled horror on your dedicated gaming PC with design intended to get on your fear filled nerves. This is best done with headphones for a full immersion.

The Verdict: A Quick, Bloody Diversion

Would Pinocchio: Unstrung get a download? When you come to Cocoflix for a production that is made with polish and prestige, no, in the case that's what you're searching for. However, if what you want is exactly what Fake-Waterfield gives you, no-holds barred, public domain, some negative streaks, short runtime, made just to be made, then yes, absolutely. It's made for the audience that appreciated concept over budget, and not afraid of getting a bit unclean with much loved IP. The audience rating of 7.6 shows that it is good enough to be what the creators intended to be. It is a quick, bloody movie with enough bloody extras if that is what you are looking for. Every night should not be like this. It is basically a movie that tells the truth about being brutally honest in what the intentions are.
