Setting the Stage for Carnage

Entering into the world of “Reacher” on Cocoflix is a declaration of sorts: you’ve fully embraced the brawny and the blunt. Based on the Lee Child novels of the same name, “Reacher” follows Jack Reacher — a former military police investigator turned drifter. The premise is straightforward: Reacher stumbles into trouble, a dispute underestimates Reacher, and Reacher solves the dispute through a combination of his considerable strength, intelligence, and the use of a variety of improvised implements. Fans love that Alan Ritchson demonstrates a physical command of the character, which is a main point of contention among fans when comparing his height to the previous portrayals of the character. While “Reacher” isn’t subtle, don’t expect anything even close to the likes of a nuanced character study. Ritchson stars as a reimagined modern-day Hercules, cleaning up towns with extreme prejudice. Though it’s rated TV-MA, the rating isn’t just for shock value. There are gory situations and violent portrayals of justice. Don’t expect complex anti-heroes. There is swift, brutal, justice brought about by a man mountain.

The Binge Test: Pacing & Punchlines

Reacher is built perfectly for the binge. However, each season of the show is structured in a way where almost an entire book is condensed across different episodes. Because of this, some moments in the show can feel like a slow burn because of the even pacing of the mystery reveal. Yet, it is punctuated by amazing, choreographed action sequences that are all builds up to Reacher getting himself into intense and often bone-breaking situations again. The episodes are structured in a way that each one leads up to one "big" showdown with all of the main characters, but some people will say the middle of the season is the weakest. However, the audience rating for the show still remains high. While there are some complaints on pacing in some of the later seasons, they still receive high ratings.

What Hit Hard (and What Missed)

What makes “Reacher” so interesting is Ritchson’s enthusiasm and the show’s commitment to its pulpy origins. The background has energy and fun; every punch lands and every takedown counts. “A hugely fun series packed to the gills with punchups” (Parker 2022) makes it “far classier than you might expect” (Rowe 2022). The adaptation of Lee Child’s novels (2005) has fans of the books almost salivating at the TV version of the hulking, jacked giant they read about. The show captures every essence, from his taciturnness to his vastness of military knowledge. It even captures his keen observations of and knowledge of human psychology.

Book fans, as devoted as they are, cite the various faithfulnesses as both blessings and curses. Some say it is “frustratingly over-faithful to the source material” (Jonathan Dean). Because of this, some plotlines are so by-the-number that they feel stale. The Reacher fandom, as excited as they are, say it best: he is nothing more than a thinking, fighting, solving machine, a “protagonist-shaped void” (Jonathan Dean), and a tedious protagonist at that. With only high-quality action, paired with a lack of any significant character development for Reacher, it can feel repetitive to binge several seasons.

Screen Time Showdown: Phone, PC, or Big Screen?

“Reacher” looks great on all devices, but watching it on a large screen TV is ideal for all the fights. The fight scenes are intense with a lot of action and many participants, plus the choreography is quite complex and intertwined with the environment, so it’s important to be able to see every couple of moves and impacts. Watching on a PC monitor is better than watching on a phone since the visuals are more integrated and you can watch longer, talkative scenes without being too zoomed in. A phone isn’t ideal but it is still watchable. With the TV-MA content, I would suggest watching “Reacher” on your PC only with adults, as it isn’t PG content. The action is so good and shouldn’t be hindered, so it’s best it isn’t watched on a small screen at all.

Will "Reacher" make your list of things to watch on Cocoflix? Definitely, if what you want to watch is a mindless action series. This one checks the boxes of an action series with a ton of violence, an intelligent drifter, and a main character who solves problems in an extreme and prejudiced manner. This will satisfy fans of the books and those who have a hankering for straight forward justice. While the narrative structure of the series can be rather predictable and the main character does not provide a vehicle for deep emotional journeys, the action is very well done and Phillips showcases his acting prowess so this series is still rather entertaining to watch. If you want to watch justice get served in a very concise and very violent manner, you should watch this. The fact of the matter is "Reacher" is a very entertaining series.
